Lomatium Dissectum Herb Pharm Lomatium Extract Supplement has an interesting history. It has been used to prevent pulmonary complication in Influenza and pneumonia. The Washoe Indians in 1918 used it during an outbreak of sickness in the fall of that year¹.  Whereas many Indians in other parts of the state died in numbers, none of the Washoe Indians died.  According to Cheri Quincy, DOb Internal Medicine of the Santa Rosa Medical Group, a major portion of the people with Hepatitis C who were treated with Lomatium had significant reductions in viral counts and many had increases in energy². Lomatium is often used with Osha for viral conditions.

I use a different formula with Osha for breathing conditions called Herbs Etc – Lung Tonic which contains fresh Mullein leaf, Horehound herb, Elecampane root, fresh Grindelia flower, Echinacea angustifolia root, Pleurisy Root root, fresh Passionflower herb tip, Osha root, fresh Lobelia herb in bladder seed stage, and Yerba Santa leaf. This formula clears my lungs when I have trouble breathing. Also of note is this formula: Eclectic Institute Inc Lomatium Osha Throat Spray, 1 OZ which contains: Fresh wild-crafted Osha root Fresh wildcrafted Freeze-Dried Lomatium root Fresh wildcrafted Echinacea angustifolia root Echinacea purpurea root flower leaf Dried Echinacea purpurea seed Dried wild-crafted Slippery Elm inner bark Dried Licorice root Dried Lemon Balm leaf Yarrow ( Achillea millifolium ) flower leaf Fresh wild-crafted Echinacea pallida root Echinacea tennesseensis root. As you can see this formula contains Lomatium in a freeze-dried state.  So I would use the first formula for lung problems and the second to relieve sickness from viruses.

Another herb that is commonly taken with Lomatium is Poke Root. Now poke root is a toxic herb like Graviola so it should be taken with caution but Poke root has a traditional history as an energy herb and a wide variety of chronic conditions both internal and external. “Medical qualities which have been linked to Poke are alternative (metabolism balancer), anodyne (painkiller), antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, antitumor (cancer fighting), cathartic (bowel evacuation), emetic (induce vomiting),  immune stimulant, laxative, and lymphatic decongestant.”³ Some formulas containing both Lomatium and Poke Root: Lymph Support Compound which contains: Red root, Lomatium, Prickly ash bark, Baptisia root, Ocotillo bark, Poke root, certified organic grain alcohol, distilled water, vegetable glycerin. Also MYCOCIDE from BARLOW HERBAL which contains: A pure extract of LOMATIUM, SARSAPARILLA, CAYENNE AND POKE ROOT. Either way both are good formulas.
